Every year we run a White Flowers campaign when the whole community is invited to scatter petals into the River Taw in remembrance of victims of domestic violence.

Last year was a big event as we invited artist Sarah Farrell-Roberts to design a whole art installation called the White Flower Field Art Project for NDADA’s 40th anniversary. For the project, we have appealed for people to get involved and help handcraft 4,000 white flowers to be displayed in The Square in Barnstaple. ‘A pair of open hands nestled amongst this field of white flowers,’ explains Sarah. ‘The hands represented the support that is there for victims and the relief they can feel once they have broken their silence.’

The White Flower Field Art Project was accompanied by an exhibition at Barnstaple Museum for the month of November, where people could purchase a white ribbon in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Week.

The event was launched, with glasses of bubbles and speeches at the museum, where there was also the opportunity to view an exhibition of poignant images of the first refuge in London, taken by documentary photographer, Christine Voge.
