Paul Trueman who is the man behind the huge Just Giving fundraising campaign inspired by the domestic abuse storyline currently running in the BBC radio programme “The Archers”, has volunteered to serve on the trustee board of North Devon Against Domestic Abuse.
Paul is the Head of Social Media at Bray Leino, a top 20 UK ad agency based here in North Devon. He’s the creator of The Helen Titchener Rescue which in 2016 raised £200k for Refuge, a London based charity. He is a parent governor for Georgeham Primary School and helps coach nippers at Croyde Surf Life Saving Club. In his spare time he’s a keen cyclist, runner and swimmer who loves living on the coast.
Paul said, “It really struck me, when I found myself raising this astonishing sum of money, that there simply aren’t enough men making themselves heard when it comes to domestic abuse. Domestic abuse is a problem overwhelmingly created by men. Not exclusively men, but the numbers speak for themselves. Two women a week in England and Wales are killed by a current or former partner. An astonishing, shameful statistic in the 21st century and there simply aren’t enough of us talking about it or helping do something about it. It strikes me that it’s time for men to start stepping up and doing our bit rather than leave it to women to deal with the fallout of such a damaging crime.
So I’m honoured to be asked to be a trustee of NDADA. It’s a brilliant local charity that changes people’s lives and I consider it a wonderful privilege to be part of it”.
Sue Wallis, Chief Executive of the charity comments, “It’s time for us all to recognise that domestic abuse is never going to end without changing the hearts and minds of the ridiculous gendered way our society operates. It is in every facet of our lives, advertising, education and media; especially the way domestic abuse is reported in our newspapers. It is unfair and damaging to both women and men. Paul, with his understanding of the issues will be a huge asset to our charity and I and the other trustees look forward to working with him.”
